The King is dying but will not admit it. 400 years ago, he could control the weather and move people’s minds. Now he is an old man refusing to accept the inevitable. His first wife wants him to face the madness and decay that come with the death looming over him. His second wife offers the comfort of pretense that it is not happening. First performed in the UK in 1962, now – as then, nations are letting go of each other and of themselves. Exit the King explores the meaning of those exits: both personal and collective.
