Martin and Mary Doul are two blind beggars who have been led by the lies of the townsfolk to believe that they are beautiful when in fact they are old and ugly. A saint cures them of their blindness with water from a holy well and at first sight they are disgusted by each other. This new vista gives a terrible insight into their condition, and the cruel face of the world, driving a wedge in their marriage even as their restored sight once again begins to fade. In the summer of 2005, Druid Theatre Company presented the first ever staging of John Millington Synge’s entire theatrical canon. This ambitious collective presentation of all six plays in the same day fulfilled a long-term artistic commitment by Druid’s artistic director Garry Hynes to re-evaluate and re-engage with one of Ireland’s dramatic giants. This mammoth project was filmed live by Wildfire during production.
